| TOYOTA HIACE GLOSSARY |
| SWB |
| SWB is Small Wheelbase, in the context of wheeled vehicles. The wheelbase is the distance between the centers of the front and rear wheels. |
| STANDARD TRANSMISSION |
| A manual transmission, also known as a manual gearbox or standard transmission (informally, a “manual”, “straight shift”, “stick (shift)” (US), or “straight drive”) is a type of transmission used in motor vehicle applications. It generally uses a driver-operated clutch, typically operated by a pedal or lever, for regulating torque transfer from the internal combustion engine to the transmission, and a gear stick, either operated by foot (as on a motorcycle) or by hand (as in a car). |
| BORE AND STROKES |
| Bore is the diameter measurement of the cylinders in a piston engine.>Reciprocating motion, used in reciprocating engines and other mechanisms, is back-and-forth motion. Each cycle of reciprocation consists of two opposite motions: there is a motion in one direction, and then a motion back in the opposite direction. Each of these is called a stroke.
| TORQUE |
| Torque, also called moment or moment of force (see the terminology below), is the tendency of a force to rotate an object about an axis,[1] fulcrum, or pivot. Just as a force is a push or a pull, a torque can be thought of as a twist. |
| REAR BRAKE |
| The REAR BRAKE or disk brake is a device for slowing or stopping the rotation of a wheel while it is in motion. |
| DIMENSION |
| In physics and mathematics, the dimension of a space or objectis informally defined as the minimum number of coordinates needed to specify each point within it. [1][2] Thus a line has a dimension of one because only one coordinate is needed to specify a point on it |
| SUSPENSION |
| Suspension is the term given to the system of springs, shock absorbers and linkages that connects a vehicle to its wheels. Suspension systems serve a dual purpose — contributing to the car’s road holding/handling and braking for good active safety and driving pleasure, and keeping vehicle occupants comfortable and reasonably well isolated from road noise, bumps, and vibrations, etc. |
| DRIVE LINE |
| A motor vehicle’s driveline consists of the parts of the drive train excluding the engine and transmission. It is the portion of a vehicle, after the transmission that changes depending on whether a vehicle is front – wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, or the more exotic Six-wheel drive. |
| TURNING CIRCLE |
| The turning radius or turning circle of a vehicle is the size of the smallest circular turn (i.e. U-turn) that the vehicle is capable of making. The term turning radius is actually a misnomer, since the size of a circle is actually its diameter, not its radius. The less ambiguous term turning circle is preferred. |
| KERB WEIGHT |
| Curb weight (US English) or kerb weight (UK/Commonwealth English) is the total weight of a vehicle with standard equipment, all necessary operating consumables (e.g. motor oil and coolant), a full tank of fuel, while not loaded with either passengers or cargo. |
| ABS(Anti-Skid Braking System) |
| Modern electronics and a hydraulic actuator compare and adjust wheel speeds when braking to prevent wheel lock-up and hence a potential skid. |
| Bluetooth |
Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communication system ideally suited to hands-free use of mobile telephones in cars. The Bluetooth word mark is owned by The Bluetooth SIG, Inc. Not all devices will be compatible and functionality will vary depending on the device. |
| Brake Assist (BA) |
| A system designed to assist the driver in emergency braking, where the driver cannot apply the high pedal force required to obtain the shortest possible braking distance. It supplements the braking power applied if the driver has not pushed hard enough on the brake pedal in an emergency braking situation – working in conjunction with ABS. |
| Dual-stage SRS airbags |
| Toyota’s dual-stage SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) front airbag system can deploy the driver and front passenger airbags at different rates according to the intensity of a frontal collision and the proximity of the seat occupant to the steering wheel/dashboard. The airbag SRS electronic control unit uses information from seat slide position sensors and impact sensors to determine the inflation rate and pressure of the airbags |
| Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-I) |
| Toyota engine system that provides continual variations of the intake valve timing to provide optimal valve timing for the full range of driving conditions. It improves drivability, performance and fuel efficiency, and reduces emissions. Dual VVT-I provides even greater improvement, by independently varying exhaust valve timing as well as intake timing |
